Hello,
I am trying to learn photoshop by following various online tutorials. Right now I am trying to follow the tutorial posted at http://www.photoshoplab.com/web20-design-kit.html
I created the gradient bar by following the directions word for word(looks great). But I don't understand why certain things worked.

For example, why was only the text affected when I used the gradient tool? Why didn't the background fade as well? Is it because of layer masking? I goolged layer masking and found out that it is useful for hiding pixels. If layer mask is black makes the layer underneath it transparent. So how could this feature help protect the background? Thanks.

Hi,

This video may be able to help your problem out. I suggest that you download the high rez file on to your computer - that way you will have it to look back on and you will be able to see it more clearer. It is a free download too BTW.

Have fun!

PS Bert has lots more excellent free videos on here on Photoshop.

I don't think so.

Bert shows you how to create realistic reflections and shadows in this month's edition of Photoshop Madness (http://www.graphic-design.com/Photoshop/photoshop_madness.html)

ALSO, try this:
