Hello! I have a recurring problem with Photoshop 7.0.1 that I hope somebody can help me with.
I run PS on an older PowerMac G4, running Mac OS X 10.4.11. On this computer I have two user accounts, which I'll call "Primary" and "Secondary". The problem is with the "Secondary" account. I run PS under both accounts, and have never had any trouble with it under the "Primary" account. But every once in a while I'll attempt to launch PS under the "Secondary" account, the splash screen will come up, and it will show the program progressing through the launch sequence. Part of the way through the splash screen disappears and is replaced with this alert message:
http://www.mister-rik.com/hosted/PSD-error.jpg
("Could not initialize Photoshop because you do not have the necessary access privileges.")
This first happened several years ago. At that time I was able to carefully watch the startup sequence and determine at exactly what point the launch was aborting. Then, doing a little detective work, I located a configuration file of some sort that turned out to have incorrect permissions. Apparently Photoshop was attempting to read the configuration file but was stopped by the incorrect permissions. I corrected the permissions on that file, and the problem was solved.
Unfortunately that was, as I said, several years ago, and in any case the problem didn't crop up again until recently. It's happened three more times in the last few months and I unfortunately cannot remember the problem file. Compounding the problem is the fact that I've since upgraded my Mac's processor from the original 466 MHz to 1.2 GHz. Now the launch sequence progresses so quickly that I can't follow the text on the splash screen to see precisely where it's aborting. I have vague memories of the launch aborting either while fonts were loading or something related to TWAIN was loading, but I'm just guessing.
Update:Looking at it again, the launch sequence is getting to the point where it reads "Measuring memory..." before it aborts.
PS7 continues to launch and function correctly under the "Primary" account. Also, ImageReady 7 (came bundled with PS7) continues to work properly under both accounts, so the file in question would appear to be Photoshop-specific.
Has anybody else ever encountered this problem, and if so how did you solve it? To date, being unable to remember which file I repaired the first time, the only "fix" that works now is to delete the "Secondary" user account and then recreate it, after which Photoshop returns to launching correctly. As you might imagine, that's a cumbersome, time-consuming process since it requires rebuilding the account from scratch.
I'll add that performing a system-wide "repair permissions" does not solve the problem (and in fact the very first time this happened came right after repairing permissions).
