Hi all,
I want to start my own web design business. There are some questions that are luring in my mind. I do have one or two clients to get started but how can I get more and spread my work to masses? How do I start designing for people? Do I need a site that displays my work, etc?

As internet business is growing day by day. As far as getting started and getting more clients is concerned, the best way I have learned is through word of mouth, and also through online. First of all you should settle on a name for your business and design/build a simple portfolio site to showcase your work. More you expose your good work more there are chances to get clients. Starting a web design business comprises a lot of things, so before getting started make sure you are all equipped to get into it.

Hi,
Internet is a place that is offering ease of marketing a business to the global market in an economical way and it makes the communication ease & fast. Each an every industry is loving it so web developers & designers will always be in demand.
Thus its a good idea, few things that can help you: -
a) Create your website and whatever work you do add it as portfolio there.
b) Initially word of mouth and hard marketing will fetch you new clients but once you site has gain some age then it will take the shape of lead generating channel.
c) Do keep search engine optimization mind and work on it regularly for your website.
I would say get into it, its good.....
Best of Luck,
Cheers,

Having the site would help your start up business to large extent, because whenever you aren't there to explain your services your site will do it for you.

Follow the following steps:
Get yourself a website.
Build a portfolio.
Market your website online.
Start getting leads.
At the start, keep the charges minimum, but increase as you build good portfolio to show.
You can also try elance.com, rentacoder.com etc for start.

First you launch your website, then do some on-page optimization (Title, Keywords, description and interlinking) and then do off-page optimization like press releases, articles, blog posts and forum posts.
Thank You.

It is much more difficult now to make a real business from web design unless you have extraordinary skills that help you to stand out. It will take time. There is so much competition at the lowe end that it may not be a way to pay the bills for quite some time. But work at it if you really want to do it!
