So randomly today my eyedropper tool started to go bonkers. Everytime I use it (without hitting any additional buttons) it samples a color to the BACKGROUND color instead of the forground color. I have tried reseting my tools, restarting photoshop, and throwing my wacom pen tablet/pen across the room (okay, I didn't do that, but it expresses my frustration). Anyone got an idea how to fix my eyedropper so it'll sample back to the forground color instead of the background color?
Running CS2, Photoshop, Mac OSX - Jack (sorry the double post, didn't know what forum to put it in) |

Try the Eyedropper with the Option Key
The color selected should appear in the BACKGROUND color box Maybe you have a 'sticky' option key. Otherwise this is not the intended behavior of the eyedropper. Dig into the eyedropper tool's settings and see if it has inadvertently been set to BACKGROUND. You did try the "Reset Tools" in the upper left of the Options Bar, right? ![]() |

The option key is how I was managing to function even with the wonkey eyedropper. It's reversed it so that if I have the tool selected and hit the option key then it will select a color for the forground color, not the background. And neither key is stuck, both work fine.
The only tool settings I see for the eyedropper tool (when you hit control) relates to how many pixels the tool is sampling from. I've searched around and I can't find any additional settings to fiddle with specifically regarding the eyedropper. Yes, I've reset them multiple times to no avail. I've been using a different short cuts so I don't go crazy (brush tool selected, hit option, then hit x to switch the background color to forground) but it's getting on my nerves and making me change after 5 years of doing it a different way. Any other suggestions? |

FIXED! .. oh sweet mama!
So, if anyone's interested as to why this happens. On your color window, if you double click your background color (on that window) to try to change that color your eyedropper will start sampling to that one. To fix it, just double click on the forground color (in the color window) and walla! ... it's the stupidest thing ever. |

I had to join this forum just to thank you for figuring this out! I've had this problem for the longest time...
Now if I could just figure out how to fix the eraser tool. You know how it is, when you're flying in Photoshop on a project and start hitting buttons and clicking icons, things get screwed up. |
