Default Adding color to a logo

I am working on a job that I will send to a service provider today, the color on the art (company logo) is in black now I need to give it a PMS color. I notice when I add the color to the logo the logo grows a little, meaning the lines get thicker, the art get a little thicker. Is there any way to avoid that? Of course I will always keep the original logo but just want to make sure I am doing this correctly. Thanks!
