Add a gradient channel?

W.C. from palm beach florida, using photoshop CS2 with MAC and PC, writes in with:

Hi... i am having trouble adding a gradient to an image and saving it in an alpha channel.. As soon as i make a new alpha channel the image goes black and i cannot apply gradient (or save it).
