Default fade images in photoshop version7.0

I just can't get it to work out... all i want todo is fade the bottom third of a photo to white. working from a cmyk tif file... it can't be this difficult.

Can't you just use a transparent to white gradient?

why dont you just create a new layer, then make that layer white. put it ontop of the layer you want to make white and carefully reduce the opacity of the white layer... is that what you meant ?.
