Default Limited Editions

Maybe my last attempt at this thread got lost. My question:
If you've sold one of your paintings but reserved rights to reproduce it and have started with limited edition prints, is it OK to use the same design on something other than art prints? i.e. using the image on mugs and tee shirts to help raise funds for a public radio station or something like that?
In other words, might people who buy the art prints feel like their purchase isn't limited after all?
