My try:
The hippopotamus:
there are 4 layers: 1. the right decoration, the background, the hippo, the car with the people inside. the car and people layer were masked by the hippo, wrapped and multiply to the hippo layer.

The butterfly:
3 layers: 1. the flag 2. the butterfly 3. the same flag which masked, wrapped and multiply to the butterfly.

(maybe there some filter like wave or ripple)

Arrow Displacement Map

Good summation Shavit...

However, I think a displacement map was used to map the red car to the hippo, rather than multiply.

I suspect the wheels were brought in separately, or else the car was greatly stretched and bent to go with the shape of the hippo. That would have probably been a warp mesh job.

Of course, the reflection on the floor was a dupe of the Hippo, after mapping, flipped, transformed and gradient masked.

It's pretty cool

Thanks for showing that, Alter 5
